Backyard Climbing Festival 2024: Community, Crag, and BBQ at A-Lodge Boulder
There’s something special about climbing in your own backyard — especially when that backyard happens to be Boulder Canyon. That’s why we’re proud to partner with the Boulder Climbing Community to support this year’s Backyard Climbing Festival, a celebration of all things rock, rope, and community.
A Full Weekend of Climbing and Connection
Running from Friday, May 3rd through Sunday, May 5th, the Backyard Climbing Festival brings together climbers of all levels for a weekend of skill-building, stewardship, and celebration. Whether you’ve been climbing in Boulder Canyon for decades or you just sent your first indoor route, this is your chance to get involved, learn something new, and give back to the places we love.
Here’s what’s happening throughout the weekend:
Friday Night: Opening Party & Speaker Series
Kick things off at the Backyard Collective Opening Party on Friday evening. Expect cold beers, food, local vendors, and a featured speaker series highlighting the past, present, and future of climbing in Boulder. This is where community roots run deep — and where the festival vibes truly begin.
Saturday: Indoor & Outdoor Clinics + Crag Stewardship
Saturday is all about learning, exploring, and giving back.
-
Indoor Clinics: Hosted at local climbing gyms, these clinics offer focused instruction on technique, safety systems, strength training, and more. Perfect for newer climbers or anyone looking to level up.
-
Outdoor Clinics: Want to refine your crack technique or improve your anchor building? Join one of the many outdoor clinics happening in Boulder Canyon, led by experienced guides and professionals.
-
Crag Stewardship Projects: Give back to the cliffs with trail work, cleanup, and access improvements at beloved climbing areas. This is climbing culture at its best — taking care of the places that take care of us.
Sunday: Boulder Canyon Climbing Competition
The stoke continues Sunday morning with the Backyard Canyon Climbing Competition in Boulder Canyon. Whether you’re in it to win it or just climbing for fun, this friendly comp is open to all and a great way to send the weekend on a high note (literally).
Sunday Evening: Closing BBQ at A-Lodge
After a weekend of climbing, learning, and laughing, it’s time to unwind. We’re proud to host the Festival’s Closing BBQ right here at A-Lodge Boulder. Nestled in the heart of Boulder Canyon, we’ll have:
-
Grilled food and cold drinks
-
Live music
-
Firepits and community vibes
-
And plenty of climbers sharing stories from the weekend
This is what we’re all about at A-Lodge: Access. Adventure. Community. We believe in supporting the outdoor culture that makes Boulder such an incredible place to live, climb, and connect — and we’re honored to be part of this festival.

Let’s climb, connect, and celebrate the amazing community that keeps Boulder’s climbing culture alive.
Asa Firestone was born with an entrepreneurial spirit and has cultivated hospitality expertise in the picturesque landscapes of Lyons and Boulder, Colorado. As the co-owner of the A Lodge, his journey epitomizes dedication, innovation, and a deep-rooted commitment to community.
Asa’s journey began with a profound appreciation for travel and exploration. His early experiences staying in lodges around the world ignited a passion for creating memorable experiences for others. Armed with this passion and a keen business acumen, he embarked on a mission to redefine hospitality in his own backyard.
In 2008, Asa’s vision came to fruition with the establishment of the A Lodge in Boulder, Colorado. Nestled amidst the majestic Rocky Mountains, this Boulder hotel quickly garnered acclaim for its blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. Under Asa’s guidance, the A Lodge became more than just a place to stay; it became a destination where guests could immerse themselves in the unparalleled beauty of Colorado while experiencing genuine hospitality.
However, Asa’s ambitions didn’t stop there. Recognizing the growing demand for unique accommodations in Boulder, he expanded his footprint by acquiring and revitalizing a second property in the heart of Lyons. This expansion not only solidified Asa’s reputation as a visionary entrepreneur but also furthered his mission of providing exceptional hospitality experiences to a broader audience.
Beyond his role as a hospitality magnate, Asa Firestone is deeply invested in the communities he serves. Whether through supporting local initiatives, fostering sustainable practices, or championing the arts, he remains dedicated to making a positive impact at both the local and global levels.
Asa’s leadership exemplifies a harmonious blend of passion, innovation, and compassion. His unwavering commitment to excellence continues to set the standard for hospitality in Lyons, Boulder, and beyond. As guests continue to flock to the A Lodge, they are not only welcomed into a warm and inviting space but also into the visionary world of Asa Firestone.
