October Live Music & Events at The Rock Garden in Lyons, Colorado
Fall is in full swing in Lyons, and October brings another great month of live music and community events to The Rock Garden at A-Lodge Lyons.
With cool evenings, changing leaves and the foothills as a backdrop, this is one of our favorite times of year to grab a drink, get some food and settle in for live music outside. October’s lineup ranges from Grateful Dead-inspired jams and traditional Colorado bluegrass to Americana, indie rock and a full-day celebration supporting senior dogs.
Here’s what’s happening at The Rock Garden this October.
Tumbledown Shack — Friday, October 2 | 6–9 PM
October kicks off with a trip on the bus courtesy of Tumbledown Shack, a five-piece Northern Colorado band dedicated to recreating the music and spirit of the Grateful Dead. Formed in 2019, the group has built an expanding catalog of Dead favorites while bringing its own personality to the music. Expect exploratory jams, plenty of improvisation and the kind of loose, dance-friendly atmosphere that feels right at home outdoors at The Rock Garden. Whether you’re a longtime Deadhead or simply appreciate a band that knows how to stretch out and let the music find its way, this should be a fun way to start October.
John McKay Band — Saturday, October 3| 6–9 PM
The music continues Saturday with the John McKay Band, led by Colorado guitarist, singer and songwriter John McKay. McKay’s sound moves comfortably between Americana, blues, folk rock, jam music and straight-ahead rock & roll, anchored by decades of guitar playing and songwriting. A classically trained guitarist who earned his degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, McKay combines thoughtful, often introspective lyrics with a band that isn’t afraid to open things up musically. His newest release, Clearing By The River, arrived in 2026 and explores a more stripped-down acoustic side of his songwriting, while the full band brings considerably more electricity to the stage.
Second Gear Bluegrass — Friday, October 9 | 6–9 PM
If bluegrass sounds like the right soundtrack for a crisp October evening in Lyons, don’t miss Second Gear Bluegrass. This Denver-based group is steeped in traditional bluegrass, bringing together veteran Colorado musicians for tight harmonies, strong picking and a mix of classic and newer songs. Their musical roots reach back to the traditions of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers and Larry Sparks, and the band’s members collectively bring decades of Colorado bluegrass experience to the stage. Fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass and dobro make this a full-on traditional bluegrass lineup—and a particularly good fit for a town with as much bluegrass history as Lyons.
Old DogAPalooza — Saturday, October 10 | Noon–8 PM
Saturday is about more than music. Old DogAPalooza celebrates the 10th anniversary of Old Dogs New Digs, an organization dedicated to helping senior dogs in need find loving homes. The organization works with shelters, veterinary clinics and individuals to advocate for older dogs and connect them with new families. The celebration runs from noon until 8 PM at The Rock Garden, and 10% of drink sales during the event will be donated to Old Dogs New Digs. Come spend an October afternoon in Lyons, raise a glass and help support some very good old dogs while you’re at it.
Trouble’s Braids — Friday, October 16 | 6–9 PM
Boulder-based Trouble’s Braids brings something a little different to The Rock Garden. The band describes its music as dynamic indie rock with teeth, pairing male and female harmonies with memorable hooks, thoughtful lyrics and a darker edge than your typical folk-rock outfit. Their influences stretch from Bob Dylan and Lucinda Williams to Big Thief, PJ Harvey, Tom Waits and Nick Cave, which gives you a pretty good idea of the territory: smart songwriting, intriguing stories and enough rhythmic punch to keep things moving. Their second EP, Tarantula, was released in June 2026, making this a chance to hear some of their newest material live.
The 89s — Saturday, October 24 | 6–7 PM
October’s scheduled music wraps up with a hometown band. The 89s hail from Lyons, and despite the name, they are definitely not an ’80s tribute act. Their original music pulls from Americana, indie rock and Brit-pop, with songwriter Eben Grace citing influences including Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and The Beatles. The six-piece band layers guitars, keyboards, percussion and plenty of vocals into songs designed to work equally well for people who want to listen closely and those who’d rather get up and dance. A Lyons band playing an outdoor show at The Rock Garden is a fitting way to close out the month’s music lineup.

October is also one of the best times of year to explore the foothills. Cool temperatures make it ideal for hiking and mountain biking, fall colors brighten the St. Vrain Canyon, and there’s something pretty hard to beat about finishing a day outside with live music around the fire.
