GRAVEL BIKING
Gravel is more than a surface—it’s a mindset. And in Salida, you’ve got miles of it. From long rolling roads through ranch country to high alpine passes with epic views, this is gravel heaven. A-Lodge Salida sits at the heart of it all, making it the ideal basecamp for both seasoned riders and curious first-timers ready to trade pavement for peace.
Cruise Cottonwood Pass, explore the Poncha Loop, or take on the demanding Marshall Pass route that blends forest, flow, and climb. No matter your route, you’ll find solitude, scenery, and that gritty kind of freedom you only get from riding off the beaten path.
For a an off pavement ride that covers a lot of ground we recommend the Aspen Ridge Loop that goes for almost 37 miles and 4,000 feet of elevation! This gravel route showcases everything we love about riding in Salida: punchy climbs, fast descents, smooth rolling sections, and incredible scenery that shifts from pine forests to golden aspen groves to wide-open ranchland. The early miles bring a steady 4–6% grade (with a few spicy 8–11% sections), and you’ll find another steep push around miles 29–32 with grades hitting up to 13%—but for riders who love to climb, it’s all part of the fun. The views of the Collegiate Peaks and the sweeping hills toward Hartsel are stunning any time of year, but especially magical in the fall when the aspens light up in color. Best of all, traffic is light—even on weekends—making it an ideal ride for gravel grinders looking for beauty, challenge, and solitude.
For those who really want to step it up check out the Salida 76 race!
And when the ride is done? There’s a fire pit, a shower, and a community of riders waiting back at the lodge.
